Veronica Campbell-Brown held off the challenge from the American's to pick up her first world title over 200m.
The Jamaican has been successful at the event at the Olympic Games but has missed out at the worlds over the last few years.
American Allyson Felix was defending champion and had come into the championships looking to do the 400m & 200m double - she could only manage silver over 400m earlier this week.
And her compatriot Carmelita Jeter was looking to do the sprint double as she had already won the 100m.
But it was Campbell Brown who, as in her semi-final, got a blistering start and was leading as they went into the bend.
On the home straight Jeter had closed the gap as she raced through the field - but Campbell Brown was not to be denied as she took the gold in a time of 22.22 seconds.
Jeter had to settle for silver this time while defending champion Felix came away with the bronze medal.
Speaking to Channel 4 after the race Campbell-Brown said: "(My goal) was just to maintain, do the curve and come out at the straight. I was able to do that tonight. Allyson's a great competitor.
"It's been a long season and finally after many years of trying I get the victory at the world championships and the only thing missing now is the (Olympic) 100m gold medal so we'll see if it's my destiny next year."
Usain Bolt was back in action in the 200m as he cruised into the final in a time of 20.31 seconds.
The 200m has looked the stronger event for Bolt all season and he had the race won as he came out of the bend.
The rest of the field tried to catch him but the defending champion was away and gone and had started to slow as he crossed the line.
