Andrew Strauss believes that England can improve further, despite knocking India from the number one spot yesterday.

A dominant England thrashed an under par India in the third test at Edgbaston by an innings and 242 runs to win the series 3-0 and become the top ranked test team.

England needed to win by two clear tests to take the top spot and India could slip to third in the world should England complete a 4-0 whitewash at the Oval later this week.

And while it’s been a great performance from England over the last couple of weeks the skipper believes that the team can get even better.

Speaking to BBC's Test Match Special, Strauss said: "We should enjoy that we've achieved one of our goals.

"Then we will look to improve as we always do."

Strauss took over as England captain in 2009 and he says that he is ‘proud’ to have achieved this feat.

“I think long term you're not looking so much at ranking as playing good cricket.

"But we stated we wanted to get to number one. It was a lofty ambition and it's great we've achieved it.

"There's been a lot of hard work that's gone into it over the last couple of years. I feel proud and honoured, not just at what we've achieved in this match but the whole of the series and what we've achieved over the last couple of years."

Alastair Cook was named man of the match for his outstanding inning of 294 which contributed to England’s first innings total of 710-7 before declaring.

They will be back in action later this week at the Oval.
