Colin Montgomerie continues with his run of form and is currently setting the pace at the WGC-American Express Championship in San Francisco.
The Scot, who won the Dunhill Links Championship, ended the day with a first round six-under par 64.
Another European England's David Howell dropped a shot at the last to finish with a round of 67 and lies three behind Montgomerie.
Tiger Woods, having dropped a shot at the eighth is in what is a large group on three under.
The seven-time European number one took advantage of one of only two par fives on the course with an opening birdie at the 10th, then picked up another shot on the 12th, his round got even better with three birdies in a row from the 16th then upping his game to conclude with a birdie at the seventh.
This put Montgomerie well clear of his nearest rival, New Zealand's Michael Campbell.
Montgomerie has never won a strokeplay tournament in America and admitted his victory at St Andrews last weekend has given him a boost.
"Saying, it was nice to win again, especially at St Andrews and that he came over with a lot more self-esteem and confidence than he had and it has proved it here.
Pointing out at 42 his game should be going in reverse but it was 'nice' to be improving.
Tiger Woods, bidding for his 11th victory in 21 WGC events, birdied two of the opening three holes and though he missed the green, dropping a shot at the par-three eighth, he picked up two more shots on the back nine.
Woods was quoted as saying , looking at the pin positions it is a pretty good score, and that for the first day they had done a pretty good job of setting up the golf course.
