Lee Westwood Will Play Despite Injury Worry

Lee Westwood will continue to play on at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship despite once again being troubled by a calf injury.

The new world number two notched up a score of -2 and a round of seventy but admitted after that he had felt some pain during play but was getting some treatment.

Before he took his place on Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup team Westwood had been out of action for several weeks with a tear in the calf as he tried to get fit in time to face the USA at Celtic Manor.

But the exertion of the Ryder Cup last weekend seems to have caught up with Westwood. Speaking to Sky Sports he said: "It's really aching now like I'm doing too much too soon.

"Playing two weeks in a row was probably too much in hindsight - I should have gone back to rehab. I don't want to get back to where it was.

"It improved a lot, but it's still not right."

John Parry currently leads the competition with -12 while Ross Fisher and Graeme McDowell are both in the top ten currently on -7 and -6.

Should Westwood finish inside the top two this weekend he would replace Tiger Woods at the top of the world rankings, after securing the number two spot just last week.
