Martin Kaymer's fine season continued as he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by four shots.
While all eyes were on Lee Westwood at the beginning of the tournament, he needed to finish in the top two to overtake Tiger Woods at the top of the world ranking.
But it was not to be for the British number one as he was once again plagued by injury and looked exhausted from his Ryder Cup exploits.
As Kaymer holed seven birdies and just one bogey a score of -17 under and a round of sixty six he secured his third consecutive strokeplay victory.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the win Kaymer said: 2People ask me why is it happening, but I'm surprised as well. I was never expecting it and I don't really have an answer for why I am playing so well at the moment.
"I've always played solid golf and my short game has improved big time the last two years and especially the last few months.
"Everybody here can hit the ball, everybody. But at the end of the day you have to make the putts - it's all about the putting."
And while the likes of Westwood and McDowell looked out of sorts Kaymer, who was part of the successful Ryder Cup side looked in fine form and he is not the leader of the European Tour's Race to Dubai.
England's Danny Willett finished three shots back on -14 while compatriot John Parry, who led by two overnight, was just one shot further back at -13.
