Rory McIlroy has revealed that he intends on play on the European golf circuit rather than the PGA Tour in the U.S.

It has been a great year for the twenty one year old who finds himself at number nine in the world and part of a Ryder Cup winning team.

And McIlroy admits that it was the Ryder Cup and the camaraderie between the European players that helped him come to that decision.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live McIlroy said: "There was camaraderie out there and I got to know the European guys better.

"If you're not playing well in the United States then it can be lonely, but over here you have your mates."

"I found myself thinking during the play-offs for FedEx Cup, not wanting to be there. I switched on the Golf Channel and watched the event in Switzerland and felt I wanted to be there.

"I'll still play 11 or 12 tournaments out there, but not as a member."

McIlroy won his first PGA Tour event earlier this year when he lifted the Quail Hollow Championship back in May and made an exciting start to the Open at St Andrews.

He shot a nine under par for a round of sixty three and was an early favourite for the title. But he hit the bad weather the next day and saw his chances of lifting the title disappear, however he did finish third.

He also finished third at the PAG Championships before gaining a crucial half point on the final day of the Ryder Cup, which saw Europe go on to beat America by a single point.
