McGinley backs Rory to deliver

Former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has tipped Rory McIlroy to be in perfect shape for next weekend's USA showdown.

The world number three has had a disappointing 2016 so far, winning the Irish Open and Deutsche Bank Championship but failing to add to his tally of majors.

The Northern Irishman is part of Darren Clarke's side for the Hazeltine team event, that begins a week on Friday, and he will hope to play his part in delivering more Ryder Cup glory for Europe.

McGinley, who captained Europe to success in 2014, has confidence in McIlroy and believes that, despite a frustrating year, he will deliver when it matters next week.

"He is Europe's top-ranked player and we all know how talented he is," McGinley said. "Apart from winning the Irish Open, he's had a quiet year, particularly on the PGA Tour and in the major championships.

"But he addressed the problems he was having with his putting, hired a new coach and that was validated with his win in Boston. It has given him a lot of confidence and I think we will see a buoyant and energised Rory McIlroy at the Ryder Cup."
