Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will wait for Per Mertesacker to return to fitness before opening discussions over a new deal.
The German defender is currently sidelined with a knee injury and is not expected to make a return until January.
Mertesacker is due to fall out of contract next summer but Wenger is in no rush to begin negotiations.
The Gunners boss says will wait until for further updates on the 31-year-old's fitness before any talks take place.
"At the moment we have not dealt yet with that situation," he told talkSPORT. "We are not especially [waiting for him to be fit], but of course he has to come back.
"We will see together at some stage when he will be back in full training."
