Valentino Rossi 101 MotoGP Wins

Valentino Rossi took the chequered flag at Germany's Sachsenring circuit after passing Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo on the penultimate lap, giving Rossi a lead in the championship rankings of 14 points.

Rossi leading from pole had surrendered his lead to Casey Stoner early on before retaking the front slot, only to be overtaken by teammate Lorenzo, the Yamaha pair were involved in a tightly fought duel but Rossi refused to give in and with two laps left charged past Lorenzo to win the German MotoGP.

Dani Pedrosa took third with Casey Stoner, who suffered from tyre problems in fourth, Nicky Hayden who started with promise ended up a disappointing 9th, James Toseland finished in 10th place.

The win by Rossi, his 101st victory, saw him equal Giacomo Agostini's record of 159 podium finishes.

Rossi led from pole position during first lap which saw Randy de Puniet crash out of third position following a fine start.

Casey Stoner took the early plaudits working past Pedrosa before taking over the lead from Rossi on lap six as the four championship riders in the championship pulled clear of the field. Jorge Lorenzo hung on to fourth.

With Rossi stalking Stoner looking for and opening to overtake, he had to stay evermindful of the threat from Lorenzo who had passed Pedrosa. When his chance came Rossi took the Australian and determined not to be left behind Lorenzo followed on lap 10.leaving almost 20 laps for the Yamaha pair to battle it out.

On lap 25, Lorenzo took over the lead into turn one but Rossi managed to return the compliment with two laps remaining, and held off the Spaniard's attempts to take the flag.

After the race Lorenzo told the press he had mistimed his overtake thinking he had more laps left in which to try and pull away from Rossi adding it had not worked out..
