MotoGP Valencia pole for Stoner

Casey Stoner has grabbed pole position for the Valencia MotoGP.

The Australian, who has had two wins in three races since his mid-season lay-off due to a mystery illness, came in ahead of Dani Pedrosa, Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo was third fastest. World champion elect Valentino Rossi with the title already secured was fourth.

Stoner, who won the race from pole last year and also set the lap record, moved to the top of the standings after eight minutes of the session and only Lorenzo ever threatened to challenge him.

The Ducati rider in third place in the championship standings lies 25 points behind Lorenzo and could still snatch second place from him if he wins the race and Lorenzo fails to score a point.
