Malaysian GP Ferrari Take Pole

8 months ago 22nd Mar 14:11

Ferrari took control of the front row of the grid for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix as Felipe Massa grabbed pole ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in Sepang.

Massa's flying lap of 1:35.748 bettered world champion Raikkonen by 0.482. McLarens of Hamilton and Kovalainen were close on the second row but were later demoted for impeding Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso, and the pair recieved a five grid place penalty.

This left Jarno Trulli, for Toyota, on the second row along with BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica, with Heidfeld up to fifth with Red Bull's Mark Webber sixth and Alonso seventh ahead of the two McLarens.

The punishment could damage the team's chances of threatening Ferrari, who already looked to be in blistering form.

The newly-laid track in Sepang suited the Ferraris and Massa repeated last year's feat by taking pole again.

The Brazilian was comfortably clear of the field and his team-mate Raikkonen and was pleased to take pole after a disastrous opening Grand Prix in Australia, where he was forced to retire from the race.

It was his Ferrari team-mate Raikkonen who actually set the fastest lap during qualifying of 1:34.188.
