Mourinho explains Rooney absence

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney won't be involved against Feyenoord as he wants to keep him "fresh".

Rooney has not been included in the squad for Thursday's trip to De Kuip, with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard also missing out.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Phil Jones are out through injury, with the latter facing around a month on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Mourinho says he has decided to rest Rooney as he is keen to ensure the England captain is fully fit for the trip to Watford on Sunday.

"Wayne has played every game since the start of the season," said Mourinho.

"He has also played 90 minutes for England and he played 90 minutes last weekend, and I want him to be fresh for the next match. In the position he plays, I have lots of solutions."

Marcos Rojo and Marcus Rashford are expected to start at Feyenoord while Michael Carrick, Matteo Darmian, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Memphis Depay may also be involved.
