Jose Mourinho reportedly won't be allowed to spend his way out of trouble if Manchester United are struggling come the January window.
The Old Trafford chief spent £150million during the summer but has seen his side slump to three successive defeats.
Mourinho is also said to have upset some members of his squad after pointing an accusing finger at left-back Luke Shaw in the wake of Sunday's 3-1 reversal to Watford.
The Red Devils travel to face League One side Northampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and another disappointing result will only increase the fan calls for changes to be made to the existing line-up.
United, however, increased their wage bill by around £30million a year when they recruited Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
And, according to sources for the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho won't be allowed any additional cash unless an "exceptional target" suddenly becomes available.
United haven't made a habit of buying in the January sales and midfielder Juan Mata was the last time they bought in that period when they paid £37.1million to Chelsea back in 2014.
