Pickford happy to be playing

Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford is grateful for the opportunity to play for his hometown club despite their poor start to the season.

Pickford was disappointed to concede late on against Spurs after making several saves in the match but overall is happy to be playing regularly for his club.

Pickford is in the side after Vito Mannone tore elbow ligaments - he will be out for at least three months - and he is relishing the opportunity to shine for his club.

He told Sky Sports: "That's what I'm there to do really, make some saves but it's not ideal to make too many saves really but that's my job and unfortunately we conceded one.

"It's disappointing, for the full 90 minutes we had a lot of defending to do but Tottenham are a top-quality side.

"But I just need to keep playing well and keep myself focused and keep working hard and keep getting better. The more games I play, the more mature I become.

"Unfortunately, Vito (Mannone) got injured but that's what I'm here to do and be a good back-up and hopefully capitalise and keep working hard."
