England rugby star James Haskell has agreed to lend his support to youth sports charity The Lord’s Taverners and become an ambassador and active member of The Young Lord’s Taverners. The charity, which aims to give young people a ‘sporting chance’, already has a star studded members list and Haskell, currently playing for England in the Six Nations, will support the charity alongside his hectic playing schedule for both club and country.
The England forward, now a first-team regular, is a keen cricket fan and was only too pleased to align himself with The Young Lord’s Taverners when the opportunity arose. The Young Lord's Taverners (YLTs) is a fundraising arm of The Lord's Taverners which was created in 1988 to cater for a younger membership between the ages of 18 - 35. Haskell commented: “This ambassadorial role is a logical extension of the other work I do with various other charities across the country. The work that The Young Lord’s Taverners do is close to my heart and I appreciate how lucky I am to play rugby for a living and be fit and healthy. I firmly believe that all children should have the chance to play sport at any level and I hope that the support I can offer will go some way to helping the Taverners to achieve this.”
John Feaver, acting Chief Executive of The Lord’ Taverners, added: “It is with great pleasure that we welcome James Haskell as an ambassador to The Young Lord’s Taverners. A charity like ours relies heavily on the support of our celebrity members and James is a fine addition to our ever-growing list of supporters. James clearly has a glittering career ahead of him at both international and club rugby and I am sure that his involvement will go a long way to helping us to raise more money for all the worthy causes which we support.”
Haskell, who started for his country at the weekend during England’s rousing victory over France in the Six Nations, limped off after just 21 minutes at The Stade de France on Saturday after sustaining an ankle injury, which looks likely to keep him out for a fortnight. The 17 stone flanker will be keen to get back to action as soon as possible to assist his countries bid for Six Nations success but looks certain to miss Wasp’s game this Friday against Newcastle.
