Gary Kemble has quit New Zealand Job

Gary Kemble has quit as New Zealand rugby league coach after less than six months in the job.

It follows a revolt led by captain Roy Asotasi.

He took over in August 2007 when Brian McClennan moved to Leeds but only managed one win in his five matches, over France.

New Zealand lost a series 3-0 to Great Britain and were beaten by a record 58-0 by Australia.

Asotasi had given his backing to former Australia coach Wayne Bennett, who is expected to be appointed soon in a coaching position for the World Cup.

The board of New Zealand Rugby League held a meeting on Friday, where they refused to sack him or call for his resignation, but hours later he announced he was quitting.

New Zealand Rugby League chairman Ray Haffenden said he regretted Kemble's decision and the manner in which it was forced.
