Jones throws down gauntlet to Cipriani

Head coach Eddie Jones has urged Danny Cipriani to force his way into the England side by proving he is the country's best fly-half.

Jones opted to leave the 28-year-old Wasps star out of his latest 37-man training squad ahead of the four Autumn Tests against South Africa, Fiji, Argentina and Australia next month.

Saracens' Alex Lozowski was handed a place in Jones' plans as the Australian bids to continue his 100% winning record since he replaced Stuart Lancaster in November last year.

When quizzed about Cipriani's absence, the 56-year-old insisted that he must force his hand by showing he is the man who deserves to play in the side ahead of players such as George Ford and Owen Farrell.

"Of course he has got the option of playing under me," said Jones.

"When he plays well enough to be number one he'll be in the squad. I don't see him as a player who comes into a squad as a number three or four player."

He added: "To me he is not that sort of player, he likes to be the main man.

"Cipriani is an excellent player, he has done well for Wasps, and he could come back into it if he keeps playing really well."
