Kiwis turn to Kidwell

New Zealand Rugby League have confirmed they have promoted David Kidwell from assistant to full-time coach on a three-year deal.

Kidwell was the number two to Stephen Kearney who quit to join the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL earlier this week.

Kearney's decision came as a surprise but Kidwell insists he is ready to make his mark on the team.

The 39-year-old, who played 24 Tests for New Zealand, admits he wants to maintain the same winning culture that Kearney had developed, with his first match against Australia on October 15.

He said: "I want to make sure that [winning culture] is upheld and becomes even stronger, that's the message I'll be giving to our senior players.

"That passion for the black-and-white jersey is paramount."
