Saints duo miss out on England calls

Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin haven't received England calls, despite being watched by interim boss Gareth Southgate at Leicester.

James Ward-Prowse, who was a late substitute for Austin during Sunday's 0-0 draw at King Power Stadium, has also been overlooked but Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand have been included in a 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia this month.

On Sunday, Southgate shunned the opportunity to watch Tottenham's top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City or Manchester United's clash with Stoke to watch a number of England candidates in the Saints and Foxes line-ups.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in the squad after a year's absence while two other ex-Saints, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne, miss out after picking up injuries while playing for Liverpool at Swansea.

"We've tried to keep some continuity from last month because my view would be that there are a lot of things that have been going right," Southgate told

"We've had a few people unavailable through injury like Harry Kane and Jack Butland, and we've lost a couple over the weekend in Danny Drinkwater, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne while Luke Shaw isn't quite back fit yet. That's had a bearing on the squad."
