Ken Doherty showed signs of his very best form as he reeled off six straight frames to beat Mark Williams.

But breaks of 101, 89, 53 and 68 helped Doherty secure the last six frames.

In the final match, Marco Fu edged out Neil Robertson 6-5 in an epic contest.

Fu, who beat Steve Davis in the wildcard round to make the first round proper, struggled to find his rhythm early on and Robertson took full advantage with breaks of 63 and 118.

However, Fu soon hit his straps and the Hong Kong cueman fired in breaks of 89, 71, 69 and 100 to win four straight frames and put himself on course for the quarters.

The latter frames degenerated into a tight, tactical affair, though, and Robertson fought back to level at 4-4 and then 5-5.

The final frame could have gone either way, but it was Fu that held his nerve to secure victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning to put an end to the four-hour, 25-minute contest.

Fu will now face either Ding Junhui or John Higgins.
