Andy Murray became the first British player in over seventy years to win at the Queens club when he saw off James Blake 7-5 6-4 to win the Aegon Championships.

The world number three has put in a string of good performances over the last week as he prepares for Wimbledon which begins on the 22nd June.

However the first set was not as easy as many expected it would be for Murray as the big hitting American Blake stood his ground against Murray matching him blow for blow.

It was the British player who struck first as he broke Blake in the third game of the opening set but Murray lost his concentration and Blake broke straight back in a poor game from the Scot.

And Blake had chances to seal the first set when he took a 5-4 lead and Murray was 15-30 down on his own serve.

But a drop shot helped Murray regain his composure as he went on to break Blake in the next game before serving out the set.

Into the second and Blake continued to battle and the first three games went with serve as they were level at 3-3.

But there were no drops in concentration from Murray this time as he seemed to move up a gear in his bid to win his first grass title.

Breaking Murray sealed up the match in impressive style, showing that he has made the transition from clay to grass well.

Despite a good performance from Murray the final fell way short of the classic from the year before when Rafael Nadal stormed back against Novak Djokovic in a three set thriller.

There was more defeat for Djokovic this year as he lost the final of Halle, the other big grasscourt tournament on the run up to Wimbledon, to Tommy Haas 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-1.

Roger Federer has long reigned supreme at the event but pulled out of the tournament after his historic win at the French Open. Queens' defending champion Nadal pulled out of the competition due to a knee injury.
