Andy Murray Crushes Ernests Gulbis

Andy Murray put on an impressive show as he crushed Ernests Gulbis on Centre Court yesterday evening to reach the third round.

The world number three took under an one and a half to dispatch Gulbis, who showed no real sign of the form that took a set of Rafael Nadal twelve months ago, 6-2 7-5 6-3.

After a tense opening match which saw Murray play below his best everyone was hoping for a more confident performance from the only Briton left in the singles draw.

Despite facing break points in his opening game, which did suggest that Gulbis was there to try and cause an upset, he was never troubled again in the first set as a fine service performance from Murray sealed the first set 6-2 in just twenty five minutes.

However the second set was a much tighter affair as Gulbis seemed to have settled into the match and was coping well with the immense crowd support for his opponent.

In the early part of the set neither player could make inroads in the other's serve and it was all square at 5-5.

Inevitably Murray just out his foot on the gas to eventually get the break he needed to clinch the set 7-5.

Murray was just relentless and forced Gulbis to serve a break point in his opening service game of the third set but he was unable to repeat that feat to make a battle of the set as Murray powered through sealing it 6-3.

And it was good news for the British number one as he made just five unforced throughout the entire match and got 73% of his first serves in. Excitement around the player is steadily growing with many believing if he can continue with this form he can go all of the way.

He will now face Serbia's Viktor Troicki in the third round on Saturday.

There was more Murray success late last night in the mixed doubles as Jamie Murray and his partner Liezel Huber came through a tough first round match.

The pair were a set down in their encounter with Rik De Voest and Raquel Kops-Jones but a packed court three rallied round the former mixed doubles champion as they sealed their victory, despite their opponents having match points of their own.
