Andy Murray didn’t face a straight forward victory at the U.S. open yesterday as he needed four sets to see of Paul Capdeville.
The new world number two took to the court in the heat of the afternoon to face Chilean Capdeville, ranked eighty five laces below him.
And it looked like it was going to be a routine encounter for the Scot as he immediately put pressure on his opponent’s serve in a mammoth opening game.
Capdeville held onto his serve, despite a string of break points for Murray, but it was long before he was a break down.
The pair used to train together at the Sanchez-Casal academy in Barcelona and the familiarity between the pair worked in the favour of Murray in the first set as he dominated Capdeville’s serve to take the lead.
Into the second and the Chilean’s challenge didn’t disappear as he dug deep to take the match to Murray. A poor service from Murray handed Capdeville the break.
And despite facing break points in the very next game he held his serve to extend his lead over the Scot. There was some inspired play from Capdeville as he continued to serve well and hit a series of forehand winners to seal the second set 3-6 to level the match.
But the comeback was sadly only short lived as Murray pulled himself together in the third set to dominate the rest of the game; Capdeville won only two more games.
Despite looking tired Murray managed to close out the match in a ruthless manner to seal a 6-2 3-6 6-0 6-2 win.
After his match he spoke to the BBC saying: "Basically, I played three good sets and one bad one.
"In the second set, I had a bit of a down, physically. I wasn't exhausted, maybe I didn't eat enough or I ate too soon to the match, because I felt like I was going to be sick.”
Murray will face American Taylor Dent in the third round as he came through a five set epic against Spaniard Navarro, eventually winning 6-4 5-7 6-7 7-5 7-6 (11-9).
