Andy Murray Stunned By Marin Cilic

Andy Murray's dream of lifting his first Grand Slam title were left in tatters yesterday when an under-par performance saw him lose in straight sets to Marin Cilic.

The Scot has a winning record over Cilic and was the odds on favourite to reach the quarter finals.

But Cilic had other ideas as he played one of the best matches of his young career. It was a close opening set between the pair and at 5-4 Murray had two set points.

But he failed to capitalise as Cilic stormed back with an ace to save one of the set points before   a backhand from Murray found the net to square the match.

Murray looked lack-lustre with nothing left on the tank as Cilic went on a six game winning streak, which saw him take the first set.

Into the second and although Cilic was struggling with his serve Murray was unable to take advantage of the second serve or force rallies.

Despite only 31% of first serves in for Cilic, compared to Murray's 81% it was the Croatian that took a 2-0 lead as Murray took just two games in the second set.

While Murray's serve held fast it was his lack of winners that was proving to be the problem hitting just four in the second set, compared to fourteen unforced errors.

Into the third and Cilic was firing on all cylinders as he continued to take Murray's game apart and capitalise on the Scot's lack of winners.

Murray won just two games in the third set as Cilic wrapped up an impressive 7-5 6-2 6-2 victory and he failed to break the Croat's serve at any point in the match.

While there was talk about an injury to the Scot he dismissed it in his interview with the BBC after the match saying: "Regardless of my wrist, I lost the match," said Murray. "I returned poorly. He served well and that was really the difference."

Murray will now lose his world number two ranking to Rafael Nadal as the Spaniard made it to the quarter finals.

Marin Cilic will now face Juan Martin Del Potro in the next round.
