Andy Murray progression through to the ATP World Tour Finals semis took a blow last night as he was beaten by world number one Roger Federer.

The O2 was packed for yesterday's night session as they came to cheer on Murray as he hoped to make it out of the round robin groups, a win for either player would put them top of Group A with two wins.

And Murray started like a train as he broke Federer twice in the opening set and although he did come under pressure on his own serve he was able to regain his composure and win the opening set a very convincing 6-3.

Murray has a winning record over Roger Federer and the world number one, similarly to his opening match against Fernando Verdasco on Sunday, looked out of sorts.

In the second and finally Federer found his rhythm as he held onto his open service game of the second set.

The early part of the set went with serve and a few lapses in the Federer concentration allowed Murray to stay with him instead of converting the chances that had fell to him.

But the Swiss player soon put his foot on the gas and in game six set up two break points, which he converted this time, to open up a 4-2 lead.

But Murray showed some fighting resolve and put pressure straight back on the Federer serve as he led 0-30. But Federer played a couple of beautiful drop shots to further extend his lead.

Despite holding onto his next service game and pushing Federer hard as he served for the set it wasn't enough for the Scot and the world number on levelled the match.

Into the final set and Murray's serve deserted him and the support of the crowd could not life the him.

As the errors crept into the Murray game Federer took full advantage and he had soon opened up a five one lead.

Murray fought in the seventh game but Federer was now in full swing and a netted forehand from the Scot handed Federer the victory.

Federer now sits top of Group A with two wins while Murray is behind with just one win, Del Potro also has one win and could throw a spanner in the works on Thursday.

Group B are back in action today as an inform Robin Soderling takes on a tired Novak Djokovic in this afternoon session. And Rafael Nadal must notch up a win over Nikolay Davydenko if he is to keep his dreams of making the semis alive.
