Andy Roddick was the biggest casualty in the men's draw on the third day of the U.S. Open he crashed out in the second round at the hands of Janko Tipsarevic.

Despite suffering with Mono over recent months the American had looked in fine form in his opening match as he was on the look for his second Grand Slam title of his career.

And the American made a good start, helped along with some errors from Tipsarevic, as he comfortably took the opening set 6-3 and taking an early break in the second.

But suddenly Tipsarevic found his game and battled back as he took the match to Roddick, who was roared on by the Arthur Ashe Court crowd, as he broke back to level the set.

In the twelfth game, with Roddick serving to stay in the set, Tipsarevic broke for the second time to take the second set. Into the third set and Roddick lost his cool with one of the line judges when they called a foot fault on the right foot instead of the left.

With Roddick clearly distracted he had to fight off three break points as he managed to hold onto his serve. But it was all in vain as Roddick lost the set when he chose to leave a ball from Tipsarevic which he thought was going out, the ball dropped in.

Into the fourth and the American seemed to have put the foot fault issue behind him and it was a more competitive set as Roddick served well to take the set to a tie break.

But the first mini break went to the Serb an advantage he managed to hold onto as he set up a match point at 6-4, an opportunity he seized at the first time of asking as he secured a famous 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win.

Speaking to ESPN after the match Roddick said: "I feel fine," Roddick said after the match. "I feel like I am going to get some rest tomorrow."

"He played great tonight. You know he's going to take big swings and pot shots at the ball. I thought he played very high-risk and executed for four sets. I kept telling myself, 'This has to have an expiration date on it.' Unfortunately, I needed another set for that."

Tipsarevic will now face Gael Monfils in the third round as the Frenchman but his first round performance behind him to see off Igor Andreev 6-3 6-4 6-3.

The flamboyant Frenchman had a losing head to head record against Andreev but the seventeenth seed was more than a match for his opponent as he came through 6-3 6-4 6-3.

Twelfth seed Mikhail Youzhny was also in action yesterday as he also enjoyed a straight sets 6-2 6-3 6-3 win over Andrey Golubev.
