Andy Roddick came through his opening match when Philipp Kohlschreiber retired at the beginning of the second set due to illness.

The American had dominated the opening set to take it 6-3 and when he dropped his serve early in the second set to fall behind 2-1 he called it a day.

Speaking to the ATP after the match Roddick said: "I feel good. I don't feel like I'm fighting myself out there right now.

"I feel like, after the US Open, I was kind of able to train the way I want to for the first time in a while."

Andy Roddick has slipped down the rankings, now at number eleven, and he admits that he is battling to qualify for the World Tour Finals in London in November, after being forced to pull out of the event twelve months ago due to injury.

"I qualified [for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals] last year and didn't get to play 'cause of my knee that I hurt here. It just looked like an amazing event.

"It's a goal at the beginning of every year. It's in my hands now. I'm in the position I need to be in."

Roddick will now face the in form Guillermo Garcia-Lopez as he saw off Eduardo Schwank yesterday.

John Isner has also progressed into the second round but it was not without a fight as he was forced to save match points in both tie breaks.

The big hitting American dropped the opening set to Lukasz Kubot but hit back against the Polish qualifier in the second set tie break.

In a tight second set Isner took the breaker 11-9 to force the match into a third and final set. Still he couldn't break Kubot and a second tie break was required.

And he came through 9-7 to wrap up the match 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (9-7) in 2 hours, 50 minutes. Isner has now set up a second round clash with third seed Roger Federer.

The biggest upset of the day so far has seen Chinese wild card Yan Bai, ranked at 465 in the world, dumped out Radek Stepanek with a straight sets 6-3 6-4 win.

He will now face fourth seed Andy Murray in the second round.
