Andy Roddick Returns With A Win

Andy Roddick returned to action with a win as he faced compatriot Sam Querrey in his opening match at the Swiss Indoors Basel.

The American hasn't played since picking up a groin problem at the Shanghai Masters last month but he is looking to grab one of the three remaining spots for the year end tournament in London.

And while it was a straight sets win for Roddick the former world number one didn't have it all his own way as Querrey proved to be tough opposition.

The first eleven games of the opening set went with serve until, just a game later, Roddick got the only break point chance of the set.

And it wasn't a chance that he was going to let pass him by as he broke Querrey to edge the opener 7-5.

Into the second and a tie break was needed as nothing split the players after twelve service games. And, like the rest of the match, it was a tight affair with Roddick just edging it to take 7-5 7-6 (8-6) win.

Speaking to the ATP after the match Roddick said: "I thought it was a really good match both ways, I thought it was good tennis, good points.

"I had to work; the second set tie-break was very hard. It was a very high level in terms of both guys getting a lot of first serves in; the unforced errors were pretty low. So I’m very pleased with how I played and the outcome."

The American, who needs to go as far in this competition as he cam to try and secure his chances of playing in London, will now face Andrey Goulbev.

John Isner was another American who was in action yesterday but sadly he was not to enjoy the same success as Roddick as he crashed out at the hands of Robin Hasse.

It was a tough three setter for the players as Isner dropped the first set 6-2. But the Wimbeldon marathon man battled back in the second, taking the set in the tie break.

The third set was another close affair but Hasse dug deep to take the match 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 7-5. He will now face the winner of Jarkko Nieminen and Novak Djokovic, they play later this afternoon.
