Andy Roddick showed that he will be a real threat at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks as he dispatched Kristof Vliegen in clinical style 6-1 6-4 on the second day of Queens.

The American number one received a bye into the second round so yesterday afternoon was the first time we got to see him in action on the grass and it was an impressive performance.

Going for his fifth title at Queens as he adapted his game from clay to grass very quickly as he dominated the service games.

While Vliegen couldn't read the Roddick serve he was struggling to keep hold of his own managing to win just one game in the opening set.

He calmed down in the second set but Roddick was just too strong as he powered to victory.

Fellow American James Blake was also in action yesterday as he made it through his second round encounter with Ivan Ljubicic.

What was expected to be an exciting match between the big hitting pair turned out to be quite a one sided affair as Blake dominated.

An early break in the first set handed the American the lead as he took it 6-2. The second was more closely contested but Blake held on to take it 7-6.

Fourth seed Gael Monfils secured his place in the next round despite being pushed all the way by the fast improving Golubev.

After going with serve for the first few games Monfils but his foot on the gas to break Golubev and take the first set 6-3 as his opponents resistance seemed to fade.

But a dip in concentration from the flamboyant Frenchman and Golubev sped away with the second set. But in true British style rain interrupted play, which seemed to help Monfils as he was able to receive treatment on a wrist sprain from a fall in the match.

When the players returned to court it seemed that Monfils has got his focus back as and the third set looked like it was inevitably going to go the Frenchman's way. But his mind wandered for a second time and Golubev was able to capitalise and push him to a tie break.

Even here Monfils couldn't dominate eventually winning the final set 7-5 in the tie break.

There were also wins for Fish, Querrey and former world number one Ferrero after Sebastian Grosjean was forced to retire because of a shoulder injury.

Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Murray crashed out of the doubles, losing 6-3 6-4 to Kubot and Marach, Murray will return to court later today for his second round match against Andreas Seppi.
