Andy Roddick Withdraws From Davis Cup Tie

Andy Roddick is out of the U.S squad for their Davis cup encounter with Croatia due to a hip injury.

The American fell during his epic Wimbeldon final with Roger Federer on Sunday and will be replaced by Mardy Fish.

It was Roddick and Federer's third meeting in a Wimbledon final, with Federer getting the better of the American on the previous two occasions.

But Roddick put up a sterling fight as he pushed the new world number one to five sets losing 16-14 in the fifth set.

He fell during the fourth set but after taking time to get to his feet managed to play without any visible hindrance from another ninety minutes.

It's a blow for the U.S. team as Roddick has been the backbone of the squad for many years playing eighteen consecutive matches for his country.

"Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his team-mates is unquestioned," US captain Patrick McEnroe said.

"Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final. Understandably, his body is not up for the rigours of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround."

Playing at him Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic are expected to lead the Croatian team.

There have also been more injury woes from the Spanish team as David Ferrer was forced to pull out of their tie Germany due to a leg injury.

Juan Carlos Fererro has been called in to replace him and will join Fernando Verdasco, Nicolas Almagro, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez in Marbella as they look to reach the final once again and defend their title.

Rafael Nadal is still absent from a knee injury which saw him pull out of Wimbledon a fortnight ago.

He may not have one, but for me the star of the Wimbledon men's final was Andy Roddick
