There was another impressive performance from Andy Roddick under the floodlights at Flushing Meadows as he powered into the third round.
Despite not getting onto court until almost 10.30pm Roddick is yet to drop a set as he saw off Marc Gicquel 6-1 6-4 6-4.
Despite a spirited challenge from Gicquel that included some powerful hitting Roddick faced few problems as he tries to put his Wimbledon disappointment behind him.
Yesterday was a good day for American players as James Blake also made it to the next round, however it wasn't as straight forward a victory as Roddick's.
He faced tough opposition from Olivier Rochus and was made to fight for his place in round three as the momentum swung back and forth between the two players.
But Blake, who made the Queens final earlier this summer snatched victory in the fourth set 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.
There was also a win for Jesse Witten as his unexpected run of good form continues putting out Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina.
Spurred on by the home crowd it was an assured and fighting performance from the twenty six year old.
This comes just days after the 276th-ranked player in the world send the 30th seed Igor Andreev packing.
Despite dropping the opening set, in what was a closely fought opening series of games he kept his composure powering back.
By the fourth set the American was brimming with confidence and Gonzalez had no answer to his powerful play. He sealed the win 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 and will now face the fourth seed an in form Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic put in another fin performance last night as he saw off Carsten Ball of Australia 6-3 6-4 6-4.
But it was a tougher test for the fourth seed as he could only manage a single break in each set to secure the victory, failing to capitalise on thirteen other chances.
But it was a good day for the seeds as Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco both posted impressive straight sets victories, dropping just thirteen games between them.
Davydenko beat Jan Hernych 6-4 6-1 6-2 while Verdasco saw off Florent Serra 6-3 6-0 6-3 to set up a third round clash with Tommy Haas.
German Haas was made to work a little harder for his victory as Robert Kendrick pushed the match to a tie break in the final set before losing 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
Andy Murray returns to court today for his second round match as he faces Paul Capdeville while Rafael Nadal is also in action in the evening programme where he will play Nicolas Kiefer.
