Andy Roddick's chances of qualifying for the ATP World Tour finals in London took another blow yesterday after being forced to pull out of his second round match at the Shanghai Masters because of injury.

This came just twenty four hours after the former world number one had complained about the length of the ATP season.

He was leading 4-3 in the opening set, which was a tense affair against Stanislas Wawrinka, when he sustained an injury in game eight.

Despite going straight to his chair and receiving assistance from ATP tour trainer Michael Novotny and a doctor the American called it a day after playing for less than forty minutes.

While Roddick is leading the pack to qualify for the end of year tournament at the O2 he was hoping to pick up good points in Shanghai after crashing out of the China Open early last week.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his match he said: "The pain is at the back of the (left) knee, and it's enough to make me stop a tennis match. My concern now is to find out what we are dealing with."

"I'll go back to the States and get it looked at. I suppose I'm lucky regarding qualifying (for the World Tour Finals) as I do have a bit of a cushion. But my main concern is dealing with this."

Gael Monfils breezed passed Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2 6-2 in under an hour with an impressive display that makes him a serious contender for the title.

Also through was Fernando Gonzalez who saw off Thomaz Bellucci comfortably 6-3 6-4. he will now play Nikolay Davydenko in the third round after the sixth seed saw off Igor Kunitsyn 6-4 6-2.

The top two seeds are in action today as Rafael Nadal has a rematch against American James Blake, Blake took Rafa to three sets in Beijing.

Second seed Novak Djokovic will play Italian Fabio Fognini.
