Caroline Wozniacki is the top seed for the U.S. Open in the absence of world number one Serena Williams, who has pulled out of the tournament because of injury.

Williams has not played since winning at Wimbledon after injuring her foot when she stepped on broken glass, while she has had an operation she has not recovered in time to play at flushing Meadows.

But Wozniacki is on a good run of form having picking up the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Monday, seeing of Vera Zvonerava in straight sets in the final.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters is the second seed, but did pick up an injury in Montreal last week and how fit she will be to defend her crown is yet unknown.

However she did lift the title in Cincinnati a fortnight ago as she saw off a storng challenge from former world number one Maria Sharapova.

Venus Williams, who has had an injury issue since Wimbledon, is the third seed while Jelena Jankovic is fourth. Samantha Stosur is looking to capitalise on her French Open final and is the fifth seed for the tournament.

Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva, who was beaten by Wozniacki in Montreal, has seen herself rocket into the top ten after her performance on the grass earlier this summer and she is ranked seventh.

A couple of good weeks on the hard courts has seen Svetlana Kuznetsova raise her ranking after a poor season so far and she is ranked eleventh with Maria Sharapova, who seems to be getting her form back with every competition is twelfth.

With Serena Williams missing from the line up this year's U.S. Open is wide open with Wozniacki, Clijsters, Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic all looking to capitalise on the absence of the world number one.
