Caroline Wozniacki was pushed to three sets by former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova before finally coming though a hard fought match.

The Dane and world number one looked down and out a set a break down in the match before she battled back to book her place in the quarter finals.

Kuznetsova has crept quietly through the draw, seeing off Britain's Elena Baltacha in the second round, and came out all guns blazing in yesterday's night session.

A tie break was required at the end of the first set and the Russian took six of the last seven points to seal it 8-6 and take the first set.

Into the second and it was Kuznetsova who was totally in control as she opened up a 4-1 lead - and it looked like Wozniacki was heading home.

But the Dane battled back as she took twelve of the final fourteen games as she got back on level terms before asserting herself in the final set.

After a mammoth three-hour, two-minute marathon match Wozniacki finally came through 6-7(6-8) 7-5 6-1.

Speaking to Reuters after the match Wozniacki said: "It was a tough match. A good battle.

"To be honest I thought about the match we played two years ago," said Wozniacki, who kept alive her quest to win her first major title.

"The last time I played her here, it was fourth-round as well, night session, and I lost the first set and was down I think 3-0 and, 4-1 in the second.

"I fought back and I won. So I said: 'I can do this. I just have to keep playing for every point.' I just kept fighting."

She will now face Andrea Petkovic in the quarter final as she had a more straight forward path into the final eight.

She dropped just five games in her clash with Carla Suárez Navarro to win 6-1 6-4.

Serena Williams was also in action yesterday as she faced former world number one Ana Ivanovic - seeing her off in starlight sets 6-3 6-4.

And she will now face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as she came through another marathon match against Francesca Schiavone.

She notched up the win in three sets 5-7 6-3 6-4. Schiavone was a set a 4-1 up before Pavlyuchenkova battled back.
