Elena Dementieva gained her revenge over Serena Williams for her loss in the Wimbledon semi final as she beat the American in the Rogers Cup.
The Russian looked set to make it to her first Wimbledon final earlier this summer when Williams battled back to beat her. But the table were turned yesterday when Dementieva beat her 7-6 (7-2) 6-1.
When many of the top seeds had fallen earlier in the week Serena Williams had battled through looking in great form. That form looked set to continue in the first set when she opened up a 5-3 lead only for her serve to begin to falter.
Dementieva wasted no time in taking full advantage as she took the first set to a tie break before dominating it 7-2.
And she didn’t hold back in the second set as Williams’ challenge just disappeared as the Russian took the set 6-1.
This victory makes up a tiny bit for her disappointing loss at Wimbledon and it’s also her third win over the American this year.
And it’s an all Russian final as the fourth seed with face Maria Sharapova won in three sets against Alisa Kleybanova.
This will be Sharapova’s first final in over a year after being sidelined with a shoulder injury, making her return earlier in the summer.
The three times Grand Slam champion, who was unseeded in this tournament, took the first set with consummate ease before Kleybanova fought back to level the match.
But Sharapova’s lack of matches didn’t show as she fought back to win the match 6-2 4-6 6-4. With this final appearance she has guaranteed herself a seeding at the U.S. Open later this month.
