There was also a straight sets win for Elena Dementieva as she lifted the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

It was an all Russian affair as the Wimbledon semi-finalist faced Maria Sharapova, who has been battling her way back from injury over the last couple of months.

Dementieva, who had seen off Serena Williams in the semi final, was the favourite before the match and it looked like it was going to go to the form book as she opened up a 4-1 lead.

But former Wimbledon champion and world number one Sharpova went on to break Dementieva twice and it looked like it was going to be a closely fought match.

But Sharapova could capitalise on her breaks as she dropped her own serve to lose the set.

Although the match was littered with errors and poor judgement shots Dementieva went on to break Sharapova on tow more occasions as she wrapped up the second set and the match 6-4 6-3.

It was the first time that Dementieva had won the Rogers Cup in a tournament that saw many of the top seed fall in the earlier rounds of the competition.

But the Russian gained revenge over Serena Williams for her semi final exit at Wimbledon earlier this summer as she recorded a straight sets win over the second seed on Saturday.

Sharapova's road back from injury got better with her final spot yesterday as she secured herself a seeding at the U.S. Open next week, which would see her avoid the big names in the draw early on.

After being out for a year with a shoulder injury Sharapova has seen her ranking drop to forty nine before pulling herself back to thirty two.
