Elena Dementieva was another big name to be sent home early from the Tokyo Open as she lost to Kateryna Bondarenko.

It was a bad day for the seeds yesterday as Dinara Safina and Venus Williams, the top two seeds, were beaten and Dementieva became the latest casualty.

The Russian, who hadn't lost a single set to Bondarenko in their four meetings, lost the opening set 6-2 as she seemed to be unnerved by some line calls she believed were incorrect.

But she pulled her together in the second to level the match in the tie-break 3-7. But her game totally disintegrated in the final set as Bonderenko took it easily 6-1.

After the match Dementieva said: "There were way too many bad calls from the chair umpire today.

"I'm surprised they don't have a challenge system at such a big event."

After a run to the semi finals of Wimbledon, where she was just a handful of points from defeating Serena Williams, she enjoyed success on the hard courts in preparation for the U.S. Open.

But that good form deserted her at the final grand Slam of the year as she crashed out in the second round.

But the top seeds have fallen in spectacular style as Vera Zvonareva and Svetlana Kuznetsova were also beaten in their opening matches.

U.S. Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki had to retire through injury in her match against Wozniak leaving the tournament with it's top six seeds.

However Maria Sharapova looked in fine form as she blasted past Samantha Stosur 6-0 6-1. There were also wins for Victoria Azarenka who convincingly beat Jie Zheng 6-1 6-1 while Marion Bartoli beat Aravane Rezai 6-4 6-2.
