Elena Dementieva defended her Sydney International title with a win over world number one Serena Williams.
Despite Williams appearing to be dogged by injury it was an impressive and powerful performance by Dementieva as she took the match, and the title in straight sets 6-3 6-2.
Serena struggled with a problematic left knee despite looking in fine form for the entire tournament. Her opponent needed just seventy five minutes to wrap up victory.
A string of unforced errors gifted Dementieva the advantage as she broke early in the opening set but Williams battled to break back.
But it wasn’t to be enough as the Russian moved further ahead to take a 5-3 lead. 5-3 soon became 6-3 as Dementieva took the opening set.
It was all one way traffic in the second set as Dementieva took full advantage of Williams’ plight as well as producing some great tennis of her own that makes her a real threat at the Australian Open which gets underway tomorrow.
Speaking about the injury after the match Williams said: It's definitely not ligament problems. It's just a little pain but the strapping usually helps the pain go away.
"I haven't played for two months on a competitive level, so I think it's good for my body to go through this now especially since I'm in doubles as well as singles.”
