Fernando Verdasco suffered a shock loss in the second round of the Thailand Open to German Benjamin Becker.

The Spaniard was the second seed at the tournament in Bangkok as he returned to action after what has been an up and down summer for the world number eight.

After crashing out of Wimbledon in the first round earlier this summer Verdasco looked to be getting his game back on track when he reached the quarter finals in New York, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

But Verdasco looked to be struggling once again in his opening match in Thailand as he fell behind 4-0 in the first set.

And while he did battle back he never looked comfortable with the conditions or with his game and Becker was the player in control.

Into the second and Verdasco looked like he had pulled himself together as the first eight games went with serve to leave them tied at 4-4.

But it was another mistake from Verdasco that cost him his service game in the ninth when a double fault handed Becker the break.

Becker was left to serve for the match, which he did wrapping up a good 6-4 6-4 victory.

Becker will now face Daniel Brands in the quarter final as he came through a tough three set match against Thiemo De Bakker.

It was Brands that took the lead having won the set 7-2 on a tie break but the momentum swung the way of the sixth seed in the second as he took it in convincing style 6-1.

But Brands hit back in the decider, once again going to a tie break, as he wrapped up a good 7-6 (7-2) 1-6 7-6 (9-7).
