Jelena Jankovic was sent crashing out of the tournament in San Diego to Alisa Kleybanova after throwing away a 4-0 lead in the opening set.

Jankovic has climbed back up to number two in the world after some good result earlier in the year and was the top seed in San Diego.

The Serb had injured her ankle two weeks ago playing in Slovenia and this was her first match back after receiving a first round bye

And the former world number one raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set as she broke Kleybanova in the first and third games before holding set points at 5-3.

But the Russian battled back and the pair were locked together at 5-5 and it was an error from Jankovic that cost her the set when she hit the ball into the net.

Into the second and it was one way traffic as it was Kleybanova's turn to open up a 4-0 lead and the double break was too much for Jankovic to get back as the Russian wrapped up a 7-5 6-2 victory to progress to the quarter final.

Speaking to the WTA after the match Kleybanova said: "I kept trying to find the key to the match. After the first few games I picked up the pace. I figured I would see what happens, and even better if I won the first set. My job today was to play, fight and win."

"I think I had lots of chances but with the lack of practice and fitness, I was pretty tired, and it showed tonight.

"I had some fear moving and was in doubt at times whether I should have been running or not. I didn't know what to expect from myself today."

Kleybanova will now play either Jie Zheng or Daniela Hantuchova in the quarter final.

But there was no such trouble for French Open finalist Sam Stosur as she needed just an hour and twenty four minutes to see of American Melanie Oudin.

Stosur dictated the match and used her powerful serve to break through Oudin's defences late in each set to win comfortably 6-4 6-4.

The Aussie will now face either Flavia Penetta or Maria Kirilenko for a place in the semi final.

Dinara Safina may have broken her losing streak earlier in the week but she wasn't able to make it past fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Radwanska needed just sixty six minutes to close out a 6-1 6-3 victory over the former world number one who is struggling to find her form after suffering with a back injury.

The Pole will now face Shahar Peer in the next round as the Israeli battled past Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5 6-4.
