Jo-Wilfred Tsonga provided the upset of the tournament on Centre Court yesterday afternoon as he put out six time champion Roger Federer.

It was a remarkable comeback from the Frenchman as he had to fight back from a two set deficit - the first time that Federer has ever let a two set lead slip.

It was a nervous start from Tsonga, those nerves costing him the set as Federer broke in the opening game. That single break was enough to give Federer the set as he served it out at 6-3.

But Tsonga didn't give Federer another sniff of a break point for the rest of the match and a tie break was needed at the end of the second.

But it was all about the former world number one in that breaker as he raced to a 5-0 lead. And while Tsonga did get on the board is was too little too late as Federer took it 7-3.

It looked like a formality now for Federer and his place in the last four seemed almost assured.

But the flamboyant Frenchman had other ideas as Tsonga seemed to settle into the match and find his confidence.

The serve was in free flow and the booming forehand was also on song - a break in the third game of the third set saw Tsonga start the comeback.

Federer did put the Tsonga serve under some pressure in his final two service games of that set he never had a break point chance as he hit back to take the third set.

Another early break in the fourth saw Tsonga in command of the set and he breezed through his service games to level the match - much to the delight of the crowd.

The Centre Court crowd couldn't believe what they were seeing as Federer looking out of answers as he struggled to make an impact on the Tsonga serve.

And when Tsonga broke in the first game of the fifth set an sense of disbelieve went round the court - Federer never had a sniff of getting the break back.

He wrapped up the incredible 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-4 6-4 win to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final.

Speaking to the APT after the match Tsonga said: "For me it's just amazing. The feeling is like maybe beating [Rafael] Nadal in Roland Garros, so it's just amazing. And for me it will be, for sure, one of the best memories in my career anyway."

"I felt so good on the court. I was quick. I was just perfect today. Every time I was feeling like a dream.

"Even at two sets down, because I was in the quarter-finals again Roger Federer. The stadium was full. I was not ridiculous. I was in my match.

"I'm the kind of player who likes these big moments. So I hope I will have some more."

Tsonga will now face Novak Djokovic as he came through a tough four set clash with teenager Bernard Tomic.
