Juan Carlos Ferrero produced the performance of the day as he rolled back the years to oust seventh seed Gael Monfils.

Ferrero has struggled with injury this summer but he stuck with Monfils in the opening set and had the chance to serve for it at 6-5.

He couldn't but the set to bed and a tie break was needed. Despite missing his chance to go ahead Ferrero stayed calm at the beginning of the breaker and took an early lead and eventually the set.

Ferrero got an early break again in the third and was up 3-1 but the flamboyant Frenchman hit back to level the set before getting another break to take it 7-5.

The momentum looked well and truly with Monfils as he won the third set on a tie break and it was looking like this was going to be a test of endurance.

But Ferrero showed his battling qualities and a single break of serve, which came in the seventh game, was enough to take the set and level the match at 2-2.

There wasn't a seat to be had on the Louis Armstrong court as fans packed in to catch a glimpse of this high quality duel.

Ferrero broke in the opening game of the decider to immediately have the upper hand, he had the chance of a double break in game three but let a 15-40 lead slip.

That single break proved to be enough as Monfils could never get back on level terms as the former world number one came through 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4  - twelve minutes shy of five hours.

Speaking to the ATP after the match Ferrero said: "For me it is a fantastic victory. I played with injuries the whole year and now this will give me confidence to go forward in the tournament."

Ferrero, who was runner up to Andy Roddick back in 2003, will need a speedy recovery from his exploits as he will face compatriot Marcel Granollers in the third round.

Granollers came through against Mikhail Kukushkin 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in his second round match.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for French players as Jo-Wilfried came through in straight sets while Richard Gasquet fell to Ivo Karlovic.

Tsonga has been in fine form on the hard courts of America after a good run at Wimbledon and he came through in straight sets against Sergei Bubka 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

While Gasquet, who had been expected to go deep into the tournament was beaten in four sets by the big hitting Karlovic.

The Croat took the opening two sets before Gasquet hit back in the third. But it was not the start of a comeback as Karlovic wrapped up the match in a fourth set tie break 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4).
