Juan Martin Del Potro provided the biggest upset of the day as he saw off world number four Robin Soderling as he showed that he getting back to form.
Del Potro missed most of last year with a wrist injury but looked to have put all that behind him as the 2009 U.S. Open champion made light work of an out of sorts Soderling.
The Swede had struggled in Indian Wells earlier this month with an ankle injury as well as a viral infection - and he continued to look troubled.
The opening few games went with serve as the two big hitters tried to stamp their authority on the match.
But it was to be Del Potro who would make his move first as he carved out three break point chances.
When Soderling saved all three it looked like the Swede may be off the hook but Del Potro didn't let a fourth chance pass him by as he finally got the break under his belt.
And it was break that Soderling never recovered from as Del Potro went on to take the set in style with a forehand winner down the line.
The Soderling serve was put under pressure immediately at the beginning of the second as Del Potro found himself 0-40 up.
The Swede battled his way back to deuce but Del Potro would not be denied as he took the early break.
While Soderling never got the sniff of a break point in the entire match Del Potro broke for the second time to lead 5-2 - before going on to serve for the match. Wrapping it up 6-3 6-2.
Speaking to the ATP after the match Del Potro said: "It feels good. I played a really good match.
"I served much better than in the Kohlschreiber match, and that's what I need if I want beat Top 10 players."
He will now face Mardy Fish as the American, who could leap frog Andy Roddick in the rankings should he make the quarter finals, after he saw off a disappointing Richard Gasquet.
