The first of the quarter finals to get underway on day eleven of the U.S. Open saw Juan Martin Del Potro overcome Marin Cilic to make his second Grand Slam semi final.

It was the sixth seed against the sixteenth and it was the lower ranked play Cilic that got off to the dream start.

The conquer of Andy Murray just days before Cilic produced the same level of tennis in the first set to  break Del Potro in game five before serving out the set to take the lead.

Despite looking uncomfortable with the conditions early on the match del Potro began to settle in the second breaking in the seventh game of the second set to lead 4-3.

From this point on it was one way traffic as Cilic, who was playing in his first Grand Slam quarter final, saw his game fall apart.

del Potro moved through the gears to produce an impressive serving display as well as going on to break again to take the set 6-3.

Into the third and there was more misery for Cilic as Del Potro dominated all aspects of the game wrapping the  set up in just over half an hour.

Growing in confidence with every strike of the ball the fourth set was even more one sided as Del Potro opened up a 5-0 lead before Cilic eventually got on the scoreboard.

He may have avoided the bagel set but it wasn't enough as the Argentine wrapped up the match 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-1 in two and a half hours.

Looking to reach his first Grand Slam final, after throwing away a lead in the French Open semi final against Roger Federer twenty year old Del Potro will be a handful for either Rafael Nadal or Fernando Gonzalez who's match is completed today.
