Laura Robson Puts Up Brave Fight

A star was born yesterday as Laura Robson stepped on the hallowed Wimbledon turf yesterday for her first match in the senior draw.

Since winning the junior title as SW19 last year the fifteen year old has mixed tournaments on both the junior and professional tour bit it was the first time she was mixing it with the professional ladies at a Grand Slam.

Despite losing the match to Daniela Hantuchova the teenager made a magnificent start that transcended her years and experience.

She hit some powerful serves and forehands as well as making some incredible shots that defied her tender age.

Seemingly not bothered by the occasion Robson had Hantuchova on the back foot from the word go as she raced into a 3-0 lead with the whole of court two behind her.

While Hantuchova, who has been a high as number five in the rankings, managed to pull herself back to 3-2 Robson continued to pressure her game as she broke once again going on to keep herself together as she served for, and won, the first set.

A real upset looked to be on the cards as Robson held the advantage into the second with a 3-2 lead as Hantuchova looked unable to stay with a played that was eleven years her junior.

But the Slovakian pulled on all her experience to edge into the lead and it was errors in the school girl's game that gifted her opponent the second set as she double faulted at 4-5.

But the start of the third set Robson looked short on confidence as she knew a major chance had passed her by but the crowd were firmly on her side as they tried to lift the young player.

Hantuchova however had finally settled into the game as she sensed that Robson was beginning to falter.

As more faults crept into Robson's game Hantuchova took full advantage as she raced to a 5-2 lead before serving for the set winning 3-6 6-4 6-2.

Despite this loss, which so easily could have been a win, it was great to see this very talented player take it to a player that was above her in rank. Robson can take a lot out of this match a very bright future lies ahead of her.
