Mardy Fish got play underway on the Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday as he saw off Tobias Kamke is impressive fashion.

There was some confusion over who was serving at the beginning of the opening set and it resulted in Fish being broken in the opening game.

But the American number one hit back immediately and soon the match was back on level terms before Fish moved ahead, much to the delight of the crowd.

Fish has been in great form during the U.S. hard court swing and has the potential to have a good run at the U.S. Open this year.

Fish broke Kamke seven times from eight break point chances and he really sent out a message to his rivals as he sealed a 6-2 6-2 6-1 victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports Fish said: "It's an honour to be able to start the tournament off on that court," he said afterwards. "It's just an amazing court.

"I was surprised when they cancelled the first match just so my match was right on at 1pm.

"I think it's probably pretty easy to say this is one of the biggest tournaments I've ever played, coming in where I've come into it. I've never come into a grand slam ranked higher."

He will now face Malek Jaziri in the second round as he saw off Thiemo de Bakker  4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

There was also a straight forward win for Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who is in the same quarter of the draw as Novak Djokovic.

He face Sergy Strakhovsky in his opening match and lost just eight games in a 6-4 6-4 6-0 victory.

Tomas Berdych, who has been in great form of late, also booked his spot in the second round as he saw off Jouan 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-1. While Marin Cilic saw off American hopeful Ryan Harrison 6-2 7-5 7-6 (8-6)
