Marin Cilic was the first big name casualty of the French Open first round as he fell to Ramirez Hidalgo.

Cilic's form has been up and down so far this season and it was a tough opening set between the pair - which resulted in a tie break.

Hidalgo took it 7-4  before producing some more impressive play to take the second and what looked like a comprehensive lead.

Into third and Cilic, who is quite accustomed to going the distance at a Grand Slam, mounted a fight back as he found himself 5-1 down.

But Hidalgo held on and the errors proved to be Cilic's undoing - committing sixty seven unforced errors throughout the match.

Hidalgo wrapped up a shock 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 6-4 win to reach the second round of a grand slam for just the second time.

Stanislas Wawrinka had to come through a bit of a scare as he dropped the opening set  Augustin Gensse.

Despite the support of the crowd for Gensse the fourteenth seed bounced back to take the next three sets and book his spot in the second round.

Wawrinka came through 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 to dispatch the Frenchman.

Ernests Gulbis' poor form continued as he lost his sixth successive first round match at a Grand Slam as he fell to Blaz Kavcic.

The Latvian had been tipped for good things in the men's game but he has faltered this season and suffered a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
