The Russian has been plagued by a wrist injury, which saw him sidelined in the early part of the season, and he has struggled to regain the form that saw him lift the ATP World Tour Finals title last November.

Davydenko's serve was not at it's best, only making 55% of first serves, but it was his powerful play from the back on the court that saw him beat the Croat.

It was a match that saw the momentum move back and forth as both players had seven break point chances a piece but it was the Russian who was able to take his chances as he broke four times, Cilic could only mange to break through the Russian's defences on two occasions.

Davydenko wrapped up a 7-5 7-5 win and he will now face the big hitting American John Isner.

Isner was facing German Philip Kohlschreiber in a match that went the distance after the German his back in the second to level the match at a set a piece.

Isner was made to battle in that opening set as both players put in strong serving performances, a tie break was needed to decide the opening set.

But it was Isner who stepped on the gas in the tie break as he took it 7-3 to take the opening set. But into the second Kohlschreiber hit back as he upped h is game and broke Isner.

Taking the second set 3-6 the match was all square at a set a piece and it went into a decider. But Kohlschreiber couldn't continues the form that saw him take the second as Isner hit back and wrapped up the match 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-3.

Novak Djokovic, who is the top seed in Beijing, should have been in action this afternoon but he progressed to the quarter finals without stepping foot on court as Mardy Fish pulled out of the match last night with an injured ankle.

The world number two will now face Gilles Simon in the quarter final as the Frenchman came through a tough match against  Michael Berrer 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(4) in three hours and seven minutes.
