Novak Djokovic faced compatriot Viktor Troicki in his opening match at the Cincinnati Masters and enjoyed a straight sets win.
Djokovic broke early in the opening set as he opened up a 3-1 lead and until he was pushed to deuce in the eighth game Djokovic wasn’t bothered on serve during the opening set.
But the second set was not as straight forward for the second seed as Troicki broke Djokovic at the start of the set to open up a 2-0 lead.
But that lead didn’t last long as Djokovic broke straight back only to break again in the fifth game to lead 4-2.
But it was Djokovic’s time to hand that advantage straight back as Troicki levelled the match at 4-4. But at 5-5 Djokovic dug deep and broke for the third time to leave himself serving for the match.
And the world number three didn’t miss his chance as he wrapped up the match 6-3 7-5 to set up a clash with Nalbandian.
David Nalbandian didn’t spend too much time on court in his second round match as John Isner was forced to retire after he turned his ankle during the opening set.
The argentine was a break down when Isner went over on his ankle; he then took a time out to receive treatment.
And while the American did return to the court it soon became clear that he couldn’t move on the ankle and called it a day leaving Nalbandian to meet Djokovic later today.
Roger Federer also benefited from a retirement as Denis Istomin called time on their match also suffering from an ankle problem.
The former world number one was 5-2 ahead in the opening set when Istomin retired. Federer will now face German Philipp Kohlschreiber as he saw off Alejandro Falla 6-0 1-6 6-3.
Speaking after the match about his clash with the German Federer said: "I'm happy he's playing well. He's a good guy. He's dangerous. He's got the shots.
“He's beaten great players along the way. Roddick at the Australian and Djokovic at the French, and has played a few close matches against me in the past. We'll see how it goes."
