An upset was almost on the cards at the O2 Arena last night as Novak Djokovic was made to fight against Nikolay Davydenko.

The pair have shared the last two Masters tournaments with Davydenko winning in Shanghai and Djokovic winning Paris, it was also a repeat of last year's final which saw Djokovic lift the title.

Djokovic is the man in form coming into the tournament with wins in both Basel and Paris and he has his sights set on the world number two spot but it was a slow start from the Serb.

He looked tired and Davydenko took full advantage of the errors and heavy forehands that were littering his opponents game.

At 5-3 down Djokovic was serving to stay in the first set but opening with a double fault summed up the opening set for the world number three as Davydenko wrapped it up 6-3.

Djokovic's game looked to be unravelling as he lost his temper at the beginning of the second as he failed to capitalise on the break point opportunity that came his way early on.

The pair were still locked together at 4-4 but an rare error of putting the ball wide on break point handed Djokovic his first advantage in the set.

Davydenko called for the trainer but was able to continue the match with no visible sign of injury.

It was the Serb's chance to serve for the set and his nerves almost got the better of him as he double faulted to hand Davydenko the advantage at 30-40.

But he regained his composure to move to deuce before securing the second set on his first set point opportunity.

The decider saw both main unable to maintain the high quality tennis but the set went with serve, Djokovic fighting off break points in the middle of the set.

Holding onto his serve the world number three moved 504 ahead and Davydenko was serving to stay in the match.

But he was surprisingly broken to love handing the victory to Djokovic two hours and forty five minutes.

However Djokovic still has to get through his matches with Robin Soderling and Rafael Nadal if he want to keep his ATP World Tour Finals crown.

Group A are back in action today as Fernando Verdasco, who almost got the better of Federer on Sunday, takes on JUan Martin Del Potro.

While there's a mouth watering prospect tonight as Federer takes on Andy Murray, a win would all but guarantee either player a spot in the semi.
